For more than 30 years, The Unemployed Philosophers Guild has made smart and funny gifts for smart and funny people out of our Ivory Tower. From finger puppets of great thinkers, writers, and artists, to transforming coffee mugs, to clever stationery, our catalog comprises dozens of categories and hundreds of products, which are sold and enjoyed worldwide. Currently, we are ten nice people and two dogs in an airy, well-lit office on Atlantic Ave. & Henry St. in Brooklyn Heights.

Role Summary
We’re seeking a talented and capable graphic designer to join us on a part-time freelance basis (in-office 2 days/week) to manage a broad range of design and marketing projects. You’ll work across print, digital, web, email, and trade-show/display materials—specifically for a brand with retail, wholesale, and licensing dimensions. Experience in gift, novelty, or retail/trade industries is a plus but not required.

Key Responsibilities
•  Collaborate with Sales team to develop marketing materials in a variety of formats, including print collateral, digital graphics, animated gifs and short-form video, emails, and trade show ephemera
•  Work with the Art Director and Senior Designer to develop graphic assets within the brand voice and standards.
•  Be present in-office 2 days/week (Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday)

Skills & Qualifications
•  2+ years of professional graphic design experience
•  A portfolio demonstrating original conceptual thinking and excellent execution and craft across a variety of media, including print, digital, interaction, spatial, and motion
•  Proficiency in industry-standard design tools
•  HTML/CSS knowledge is a plus
•  A strong grasp of the fundamentals of graphic design – including typography, color theory, composition, hierarchy, and gestalt
•  An ability to manage several projects simultaneously and meet reasonable deadlines
•  Strong communication skills
•  Curiosity and enthusiasm toward art, science, literature, philosophy, etc.
